So if you have been following the last two Vs. they were “Walk On By” related I figured I might as well do it one last time. In this Vs. it’s DJ Premier vs Slick Rick. Both go to “Walk On By” related songs. On “Mona Lisa” Slick Rick directly samples the Dionne Warwick song (and speeds it up) where Premier samples a cover of it for “Full Clip”. The cover is by Cal Tjader but he doesn’t sample Tjader’s vibraphone but the guitar in the track. The Cal Tjader cover was on his Sounds Out Burt Bacharach album that came out in 1968. So from a technical perspective Premier wins. Slick Rick just speeds up a sample and throws it in his song where Premier takes a little sample and makes a song out of it. But since I did two previous Vs. related to “Walk On By” I felt might as well throw these up as well.
